The Farmhouse is a cooperative community dedicated to shared living, mutual support, affordable housing and responsible stewardship of our home in Berkeley.
With twenty residents and two dogs, we are a diverse community of teachers, students, scientists, artists, lawyers, community organizers, gardeners, healers, and more—mostly in our 30s and 40s—from all over California (including East Bay & Berkeley locals), the U.S., and the world.
We share labor, resources, and decision-making to create an equitable and affordable living environment. Through collaboration and accountability, we support one another’s growth, well-being, and sense of belonging.
The Farmhouse has provided community-oriented housing rooted in cooperation and care for over ten years.
Originally built in the 1880s, the house has evolved alongside the city of Berkeley itself—shifting from a private residence to apartments, to a religious organization, to a commune, and to various community-serving uses over the decades.
